As an added bonus to this year’s festival, Tiata Fahodzi will also be showcasing the UK premiere of 365 DAYS/365 PLAYS Suzan-Lori Parks’s extraordinary feat of writing a play a day for the whole year.

Each Tiata Delights play will begin with a short performance (no longer than three minutes) of a piece conceived and dedicated for that particular day within Suzan-Lori’s cycle. The beauty of this staging lies in the fact that these same plays will be performed on the  same day in at least 17 other venues around the world.

365Days/365Plays aims to raise awareness of the deep underlying unity which universal theatre making exudes, and offers Tiata Fahodzi the rare opportunity to be part of a vast international project while retaining artistic control over its own.

Abyssinia

Abyssinia

This powerful story focuses on the eighteen year old Prince Alemayehu of Ethiopia and his surrogate relationship with this country’s longest reigning monarch, Victoria.

It examines how the young prince’s presence in England up to the time of his demise has contributed to the grand design of this country. His short life in England had such a profound effect on the ageing queen Victoria, that she instructed parliament to lay his remains within the castle grounds. This was a huge exception to the rule, as the prince of Abyssinia remains the only non-monarch buried at Windsor, amongst the ten previous kings and queen of the country.

Makinde

Makinde

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Makinde is the story of a young British graduate of West African royal descent, who on the eve of his honeymoon, is summoned back to his West African homeland. The purpose of his return is shrouded in mystery. He is thrown into a long-running local conflict and hailed as a messiah. The piece seeks to highlight the conflict of love and loyalty and the role of the supernatural in contemporary Nigeria.
